Review of Make Believe Anthology

Make BelieveI stumbled upon Make Believe through a couple of the authors’ blogs I follow and was lucky enough to win the chance to review an ARC. I’m a dyed in the wool fantasy lover, meaning covers are usually what call to me and this cover did exactly that. How could I not put my name in the hat? It’s a beautiful piece of work and hints at the excellent collection of tales that lies within.

Six stories that ran the gamut from straight up fantasy to modern day paranormal, all with a bit of romance and a twist to keep the reader on their toes made for an enjoyable read all the way through. Honestly, I found it hard to pick a favorite, but if I did it would have to be The Amulet of Ormisez by J. Keller Ford. I’ll admit, it took me a bit to get into this story and I had to go back over bits of the beginning. However, once in, I was hooked. Engaging characters and the introduction of selkies was totally something new. If I have one criticism, it lies with Felicity and the ease with which she falls into her life.

Petrified by Kelly Said also rated highly for me (told you, lover of fantasy here). I had an inkling what the twist would be early on, but I was only partially right. I like being wrong in that regard. The ending was a tad predictable but in no way detracted from the enjoyment of the tale, and we all need a happy ending from time to time.

The rest of the tales included in the anthology were just as well-written and carefully crafted, definitely putting all of these authors on my list of ones to watch for.

  1. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and review the anthology. I am so happy you enjoyed it. And just as a bit of trivia…I had no idea I was going to write about selkies when I started the story. They just ‘appeared’. I love it when that happens in the creative process. 🙂

  2. I have a particular soft spot for the selkie legends. It sounds great!

  3. I agree that JK Ford’s was my favorite as well. I knew it would be in that first scene. Such great imagery! I’m glad you enjoyed the anthology.

  4. So glad you enjoyed the antho! Thanks for the great review.
